There will be both jet and turboprop versions of the high-wing aircraft, which will be configurable in VIP, ambulance, military or special-mission format. A first flight in 2023 is targeted.
Project partners include a host of Turkish companies: Turkish Aerospace Industries, Aselsan, TEI, Havelsan, Kale Aero, Alp Aviation, TSI andTurkish Airlines.
As a precursor to the TRJ628, Sierra Nevada intends to produce 50 aircraft based on the Dornier 328, of which the US-based company holds the type certificate. Modernisation of the type will encompass new engines, again of both the jet and turboprop variety, plus a redesigned cockpit. The 30-33-seat aircraft will be used by Turkish Airlines for regional operations, and Turkey's armed forces have shown interest in both the jet and turboprop versions of the aircraft, which will also be offered in ambulance configuration and as a VIP government transport.
The regional jet will be called TRJ328 and the turboprop the T328. Turkey is to provide engineering support to Sierra Nevada, and manufacture parts.
While the main production line will be in the USA, green aircraft will be sent to Turkey for cabin outfitting, painting and delivery.
